Turtle Mound Flutes makes a line of flutes from
electrical conduit PVC. Although these look,
play, and sound very much like a wooden Native American style flute, they lack
the natural spirit that the Great Creator gives us in the wood or cane of a true
Native American Flute. We make these flutes with the same respect and care that
we put into our wooden flutes, but distinguish them from our wooden Native
American style flutes by calling them Knock-About Flutes.

1" Bore Knock-About Flutes in the Keys of F, E,
and E♭ |
Our Knock-About Flutes (made from the branch of the rugged poly-vinyl
tree) are ideal for the rough treatment of children, back-packing, kayaking, or just
carrying around in the back seat or trunk of your car (where extreme
temperatures can crack or otherwise damage a quality wooden flute).
Each Knock-About
Flute is individually crafted from heavy-duty "schedule 80" PVC
and carefully tuned to the indicated key. Each flute also has a cherry
wooden mouthpiece to not only more closely resemble the playing of a wooden flute but
also prevent you from having to put your lips directly onto the PVC. Each Knock-About
Flute is made in the woodlands style (with the flue in the flute body)
with a simple, low-profile cedar wooden fetish that is attached with
deerskin laces.
These flutes are not only virtually indestructible, but we can offer them for
a fraction of the price of their wooden cousins. While our Knock-About Flutes
may be the perfect "starter flute" for the budget-conscious first time
flute buyer, they are also popular with experienced players for use in
environments that could damage a quality wooden flute. Below are the Knock-About Flutes we are currently making.
Additional keys will be added over time. Please contact us if you would like a
different key.

How durable are our Knock-About
Flutes? Annette Abbondanza of Painted
Raven passed along the following tale:
I love the knockabout flute! It really got put to the endurance
test... I just got back from hiking the Appalachian Trail in Georgia
and took the flute along.
It got soaking wet in the heavy rain that lasted 3 consecutive
days, it got bumped around, it fell out of my pack and bounced on the
hard rock...but after all that it still played beautifully at the top
of Blood Mountain. (attached is a photo)

Every once in a while a flute maker will get a photo of his flute being
played in a unique environment. This photo was passed along to me by a
member of the Indian River Flute Circle and it touched my heart.
The young lady playing a Turtle Mound Flutes Knock-About
Flute is Holly Findley, Midwife, in October 2012. Holly is a missionary
with the International Aid Services in Nyinbuli Village, South Sudan.
This is a great example of why the Knock-About Flutes are made so
durable. We wish Holly safe keeping in her mission and many hours of
enjoyment with her flute.
